Apple-1

The Apple-1, released in 1976 by Steve Wozniak & Steve Jobs, was clearly a groundbreaking design for the time, and is truly one of the pioneer systems of the microcomputer revolution, despite there only having been around 200 manufactured in total. Built around a low cost 6502 microprocessor and containing a built-in "TV-typewriter", the Apple-1 was one of the first computers sold display-ready out of the box, not requiring any additional expansion cards or software to work with a monitor (or plain old TV, with an RF modulator) - although it was still up to the purchaser to supply the power transformers, keyboard, and cabinet (or simple plywood board, in at least some cases) to mount the board and parts.

The only built-in "language" was the machine code of the 6502 processor itself, accessible in raw hexadecimal using the monitor program supplied in ROM. BASIC was later made available on Cassette tape, along with a cassette tape interface board that plugged in to the single expansion slot.

This Apple-1 is a replica built using a PC board that very closely mimics the exact layout of the original Apple-1 board, and the complete original chip set used by the Apple-1. It is mounted on a plywood board in the style of the original Apple-1 basement/garage users - not quite as fancy or innovative as some of the full cases original Apple-1's were put into, but for this exhibit OK because it allows the board itself to be shown in more detail. This collection also contains a functional Apple-1 Prototype replica, and within that exhibit are contained several "DIY" articles for the Apple-1, as well as additional pictures of this Apple-1 next to the prototype, and in action with some of the add-on items.
